A common source for moisture intrusion is a defective or non-existing kick-out or diverter flashing. This is a special flashing that is installed when a vertical wall intersects a horizontal wall. The function of this flashing is to divert the water away from the roof/wall intersection and into the gutter, preventing water from getting behind the existing cladding and causing damage to the exterior wall. The updating or replacing of existing kick-out flashings is a common recommendation made by EIFS inspectors within their inspection reports.
